PILI Luna shoot gun tutorial

Hello everyone, today we’re going to present you the process of making Yue’s weapon—-Luna shoot gun.We emit some pictures in order to save the time and space, because the processes can be complex and confusing due to the trivial and numerous pieces. As a result, you should be really familiar with the previous blog’s introduction to making cosplay props, for it is better to manage some conceptual basement and technical knowledge. Usually, I start with some pre-made elements, and then establish the scaling and size of rest parts according to these elements. In this way(which is really effective) it can prevent me from making mistakes which involves elements of different scales made hastily in the first place but cannot be matched well in the final assemble. Sorry for the complicated presentation if you cannot get it.

Materials:

1. Organic Board: you pick this board in a lettering shop or an Ad shop. This kind of board is flexible but thin, suitable for making small parts or ornaments in low relief on the surface. Strongly recommend ABS board if possible.

2. Acrylic Board: it’s thicker but more fragile than the first one. And it’s not easy to be out of shape, so it’s suitable to make the base. When you cut this kind of board, it’s possible to break the board so you have to pick material less than 2 mm.

3. PVC Board: You can find in a large Ad shop. It feels like thick paper board and bends to some angle when warm up. It is easy to cut off compared to the first two materials. You can use PVC to make some simple accessories for its better endurance. I use the 3 mm kind.

As you can see from the left reference picture, what we are going to make is delicate and geometrically complicated in details, which is extremely a good combine of boards. In the left pic, these boards are sorted from left to right. It’s difficult to tell the differences from organic and acrylic. But you can distinguish them from the thickness and hardness. Organic is 1 mm thick and softer. The easiest way is to ask the seller for what you need of course.

4. PVC pipe: sold in hardware store in different types

5. Unsaturated Polyester Putty: used in fix the flaws and modify the shape, and is very hard after the solidification

6. Glue

Tools:(from the left to the right)

1. Cutter

2. Bush-Hook: used to cut thick boards

3. File: used to modify the shape

4. Saw blade: usually equipped on saw, to skip the inconvenience I directly use the blade, plz don’t follow. ^^

5. Metal Clamp, Diagonal Cutting Pliers, Vice: use to cut the material

6. Sandpaper

Making process:

After the preparation, we move on to make the prop. First we cut boards and PVC pipe to shape the side face and the handle. (Slice one bottom of the PVC pipe with saw blade, so it’s easy to insert the handle) then, adhere these parts with glue, after all, they are not the main force point and the join-up attached with glue is easy to deal. Even if these point suffer from main force, it can be covered by the rest parts. Choose different boards according to different parts at different places, only remember to consider the character of boards and equipments. Then, build up the solid surface of the handle with putty, and smooth the seams and flaws with it. Remember this process, if you attach the embossment before you fix these problem, you can’t polish it with ease.

The finished handle: I only attach white object to form the trigger, for the convenience of coloring it black. If you attach the trigger now, you have to cover this part with tapes, which is troublesome. The yellow material is putty and black parts are other stuff used to substituted putty.

Add some metal units. You can find these things used to make clothes in a fabric fair.

Black the holes in the side face. The effect is perfect and save the time to really perforce.

Warp piece of metal in circles, and attach them on below the gun to form the big circles.

I pull off one firing-pin from my toy gun in order to save time. You can cut a similar thing from metal board.

Find two gear-like screw-caps to stick on both sides.

__________________________________________________________________

Then we continue the modeling work. As showed in the picture, stick several boards with glue. After you finish the attachment work, you’ll find the join-ups to be coarse and with seams, so it’s time to apply glue on the surface and sand it. (Otaku who like to build up models must be familiar with this procedure)

Now we have a look at what we’ve done, and fix up them. Find a metal pipe, attached it on the finished parts. (Use AB glue, for metal pipe is heavy and will easily fall off the props) Check the general proportion, and go on after you’re sure it’s ok. Cut these trivial parts according to the following pictures. There are so many different and bizarre components, if you don’t pay attention it’ll easily lead you astray.

More, er, let’s start to make these ornaments. As showed in the pictures, there are so many parts shaped in circle or circle in circle. Prepare several different sized round buttons, and cut them off, remove the middle bar, smooth them and paint glittering silver.

Assemble all the parts with glue. If you worry about the hardness of the attachment, you can also use AB glue. There are 4 black lines. Cut 4 curved strips, black and attach them on the prop. The final process is to cut two long strips with organic boards, and stick them with the circles on the metal pipes.

Finally, you have finished the blunderbuss. It must be a hard work. During making this gun, you’ll find some more materials, or some skills. Most of the time, it’s not exactly what you read from the books or pictures that can be use to make gun. You can discover other things to make good costumes. Do more and bravo.

PS. If you don’t crash or strike with it, it’ll be safe, for it’s mainly made of putty and metal, but the metal pipe and handle could kill someone. It’s tough except for some area where there are lots of small parts. For everyday care, swap the dust will be ok.
